Lore

Why it matters

Neil Gaiman’s 1990 miniseries *The Books of Magic* served as a foundational exploration of the mystical corners of the DC Universe, introducing a young Timothy Hunter to the wider world of arcane lore. Collectors prize this first issue for its status as a critical bridge between classic DC mysticism and the influential mature-readers tone that would soon define the Vertigo imprint.

Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1990 by DC Comics, Books of Magic #1 served as a four-issue prestige format miniseries written by Neil Gaiman. The project emerged from a desire by DC to spotlight the darker, mystical corners of their fictional universe, tasking Gaiman with synthesizing the history of magic within the canon while introducing a new protagonist, Timothy Hunter, a young boy destined to become the world's most powerful mage.

The series featured an ambitious collaborative design, with each of the four issues illustrated by a different artist: John Bolton, Scott Hampton, Charles Vess, and Paul Johnson. This structure allowed for a diverse visual exploration of the DC magical landscape, and the work was received with significant critical acclaim, effectively bridging the gap between mainstream comics and the emerging Vertigo imprint, which would formally launch shortly thereafter.
