Books of Magic #2

Books of Magic #2, published in 1993, served as the second installment in the ongoing series that spun out of Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed 1990 miniseries of the same name. Following the story of Tim Hunter, a young boy destined to become the world's most powerful mage, the ongoing series was tasked with expanding the mystical foundations established in the original graphic novel. The creative team aimed to blend urban fantasy with the gritty, mature tone typical of the Vertigo imprint, exploring the consequences of magic in a modern setting.

The series continued the narrative tradition of featuring a rotating cast of artists and writers to capture the surreal, shifting nature of the DC Universe’s occult side. The aesthetic of the early issues maintained a dark, atmospheric style that drew heavily from the visual language of 1990s dark fantasy comics. While the miniseries received near-universal acclaim, the ongoing series faced the challenge of maintaining that momentum, eventually finding its footing as a staple of the Vertigo line through its focus on coming-of-age themes and the high stakes of supernatural education.
