Books of Magic #4

Books of Magic #4, published in 1991, serves as the conclusion to the original four-issue prestige format miniseries written by Neil Gaiman. The series was commissioned by DC Comics to spotlight their occult and supernatural characters, following Gaiman's successful reimagining of The Sandman. The narrative centers on Timothy Hunter, a young boy destined to become the world's most powerful magician, who is guided through the history of the DC Universe by a quartet of supernatural mentors.

The fourth issue, illustrated by Charles Vess, showcases the series' signature blend of mythic storytelling and lush, painterly art. Vess’s contribution was pivotal in establishing the ethereal tone that distinguished the work from standard superhero fare. Upon its release, the miniseries was critically lauded for its literary depth and eventually became a cornerstone of the Vertigo imprint, influencing a generation of dark fantasy comics and solidifying Gaiman's stature within the medium.
