Call of the Night #2

Call of the Night, written and illustrated by Kotoyama, began its serialization in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday in 2019. The series emerged as a stylistic departure for the creator following the conclusion of Dagashi Kashi, focusing on the nocturnal encounters between an insomniac middle schooler and a vampire. Volume two continues the exploration of this moody, urban aesthetic, emphasizing the atmospheric allure of late-night Tokyo through high-contrast art and detailed character expressions.

The design of the second volume maintains the series' distinctive visual language, characterized by a vibrant yet dark color palette that mirrors the nocturnal themes of the narrative. Kotoyama's approach prioritizes a cinematic feel, balancing character-driven dialogue with expansive, lonely cityscape backgrounds. Upon its release, the series was well-received for its unique blend of slice-of-life pacing and supernatural elements, contributing to its subsequent adaptation into an anime series by Liden Films.
