Call of the Night #6

Call of the Night, or Yofukashi no Uta, is a manga series authored and illustrated by Kotoyama, first serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday in 2019. The sixth volume continues the narrative of Ko Yamori, a middle school student experiencing insomnia, who finds himself drawn into the nocturnal world of Nazuna Nanakusa, a vampire. Kotoyama’s design aesthetic for the series is defined by high-contrast, atmospheric urban settings and a distinct, stylish character focus that leans into the moody, ethereal aesthetic of nightlife.

This volume arrived as the series was solidifying its reputation for blending slice-of-life tropes with supernatural urban fantasy. The visual presentation reflects Kotoyama's background in creating visually striking character portraits, emphasizing depth and lighting to mirror the shifting dynamics between the protagonist and his vampire companion. Upon release, the series and its individual volumes were well-received for their artistic direction, eventually leading to a successful anime adaptation by Liden Films.
