Ce Vide au Fond de Moi #1

Ce Vide au Fond de Moi is a deeply personal autobiographical comic series by the French cartoonist Mathieu Sapin. Published in the early 2000s, this work emerged during a period when the French indie scene, particularly through publishers like L'Association, was revitalizing the medium by prioritizing intimate, diaristic narratives over traditional genre fiction. This inaugural issue documents Sapin's own vulnerabilities and existential anxieties, setting a tone that is simultaneously self-deprecating and highly observational.

The aesthetic of the series reflects Sapin’s signature loose, expressive line work, which favors immediacy and raw emotion over technical polish. By stripping away visual ornamentation, the design forces the reader to focus on the nuances of his internal monologue and the mundane, often awkward, interactions that define his daily life. The series was well-received by critics for its honesty and its contribution to the 'nouvelle bande dessinée' movement, establishing Sapin as a significant voice in contemporary graphic literature.
