Clevatess: The King of Dark Beasts, the Baby, and the Undead Hero #1

Clevatess: The King of Dark Beasts, the Baby, and the Undead Hero, written and illustrated by Hiroyuki Akai, began serialization in early 2021 through the Japanese publication Comic Meteor. The story follows the Demon King Clevatess, who destroys humanity at the behest of God, only to find himself tasked with raising a human infant left behind in the ruins. Akai designed the series to subvert traditional high-fantasy tropes by shifting the focus from epic conflict to the unlikely, tender, and often humorous dynamic between an omnipotent beast-king and a defenseless child.

The series is noted for its juxtaposition of dark, gothic fantasy aesthetics with domestic comedy. Akai’s artistic style emphasizes the imposing, monstrous nature of Clevatess against the soft, innocent design of the infant, effectively conveying the central irony of the narrative. Upon its release, the first volume was well-received by readers for its unique blend of gritty world-building and character-driven heart, establishing it as a distinct entry in the contemporary fantasy manga landscape.
