Where it came from
Colette Decides to Die was launched in the mid-2010s as a gritty, character-driven indie comic series exploring themes of existentialism and urban malaise. Issue 8 arrived during the heart of the series' second narrative arc, serving as a pivotal chapter where the titular protagonist confronts the consequences of her earlier impulsive life choices. The series gained a cult following for its stark, high-contrast visual style and its refusal to offer easy resolutions for its protagonist's internal conflicts.
The art and writing for this issue maintain the signature minimalist aesthetic established by the series creator, who utilized limited color palettes to emphasize the cold, detached atmosphere of the setting. The issue was received by critics as a somber meditation on agency, and while it remained a niche publication, it was frequently cited by independent comic enthusiasts as a standout example of modern existential storytelling within the graphic novel medium.
