Where it came from
Conan the Barbarian #123 was published by Marvel Comics in June 1981, emerging during a period when the series had firmly established itself as a cornerstone of the company’s non-superhero offerings. This issue features the work of writer J.M. DeMatteis and artist Gil Kane, representing a transition in the title's creative direction as Marvel sought to maintain the high-fantasy intensity defined by Robert E. Howard’s original prose while adapting it to the serialized pacing of Bronze Age comic books.
The cover art and interior illustrations reflect the dynamic, musculature-focused aesthetic that Gil Kane brought to the character, emphasizing the gritty, visceral nature of the Hyborian Age. At the time of its release, the series was lauded for its ability to weave complex, often darker narrative arcs for the Cimmerian, distancing the character from the more colorful, spandex-clad tropes of the mainstream Marvel Universe.
