Where it came from
Published in January 1981, Daredevil #168 marks a watershed moment in comic book history as the first issue written and drawn by Frank Miller during his iconic tenure on the series. While Miller had been providing interior art for the title since issue #158, this installment signaled his transition into the role of writer, effectively shifting the tone of the series from traditional superhero fare to a gritty, noir-inspired crime drama that became his signature style.
The issue is most famously recognized for the first appearance of Elektra Natchios, a complex assassin and love interest from Matt Murdock's past. Miller's creation of the character was intended to heighten the psychological stakes for Daredevil, introducing a moral ambiguity that challenged Murdock's Catholic guilt and commitment to the law. The introduction of Elektra was received with immense critical acclaim, cementing the issue as a cornerstone of modern comics and setting the stage for Miller's influential run.
