Where it came from
Released in 1986, Dark Horse Presents #5 served as an early pillar for Dark Horse Comics, which sought to provide a creative home for creator-owned projects. Published during the company's inaugural year, the anthology format allowed the publisher to experiment with diverse genres and artistic styles, effectively acting as a launchpad for experimental storytelling that stood in contrast to the traditional superhero models prevalent at the time.
This specific issue is notable for its contributions to the Concrete series, created by Paul Chadwick. Chadwick’s design aesthetic for the character focused on grounded, humanistic narrative themes rather than conventional action-oriented tropes. The series was well-received for its thoughtful approach to character development, helping to solidify the anthology’s reputation as a venue for high-quality, author-driven comics.
