Where it came from
DC Comics Presents #39, published in November 1981, serves as a significant entry in the team-up series that paired Superman with a diverse roster of DC characters. During this era, the title was curated to showcase high-stakes adventures that spanned the wider DC Universe, often utilizing creative teams that could bridge the gap between classic superhero storytelling and the more experimental narrative trends of the early 1980s.
This particular issue features a collaboration between writer J.M. DeMatteis and artist Gil Kane. The story centers on Superman joining forces with the Metal Men to confront the threat of the Monolith. The issue is noted for Kane's kinetic, energetic pencil work, which was a hallmark of his tenure at DC during this period, providing a distinct visual contrast to the more traditional house styles of the time.
