Where it came from
DC Comics Presents #40 was published in December 1981 as part of a long-running team-up series that paired Superman with various characters across the DC Universe. This specific issue was produced during a period when the title focused on expanding the mythos of Superman by integrating him into unconventional pairings, reflecting the editorial desire to showcase the versatility of the Man of Steel against diverse threats in a self-contained, episodic format.
The issue features a story written by Dan Mishkin and Gary Cohn, with artwork by Rich Buckler and Dick Giordano. The creative team aimed to blend traditional superhero adventure with supernatural elements, focusing on a team-up between Superman and Doctor Fate. It is regarded by collectors as a representative example of the Bronze Age era, noted for the distinctive, polished house style of DC Comics at the time and the collaboration between established veteran artists.
