Where it came from
DC Comics Presents Annual #4 was published in 1985, arriving during a transitional period for DC Comics as the publisher prepared for the landmark Crisis on Infinite Earths event. The series was designed to showcase team-ups between Superman and various members of the DC Universe, and this specific annual served as a vehicle to spotlight the cosmic scale and character dynamics prevalent in the mid-1980s DC line.
The issue features an ambitious script by Elliot S. Maggin and interior art by Curt Swan, a definitive Superman artist whose work anchored the character's aesthetic for decades. By positioning Superman alongside the Justice League of America, the creative team aimed to reinforce the interconnected nature of the publisher's roster, crafting a narrative that balanced traditional heroics with the increasingly complex continuity that preceded the 1986 reboot.
