Where it came from
Die Adler Roms, known in Italian as Le Aquile di Roma, is a historical graphic novel series created by the Italian author and illustrator Enrico Marini. Launched in 2007, the series is set during the reign of Augustus and follows the intertwined lives of two boys: Arminius, a Germanic prince, and Marcus, a Roman noble. Marini intended to blend rigorous historical research with the cinematic sensibilities of a western or a sword-and-sandal epic, focusing on themes of loyalty, cultural identity, and the brutality of Roman frontier life.
The seventh volume continues Marini's ambitious narrative, which is renowned for its lush, painterly aesthetic and dynamic page layouts. Marini famously handled both the writing and the elaborate watercolor illustrations himself, aiming to capture the stark contrast between the disciplined Roman legions and the untamed Germanic tribes. Upon its release, the series received significant critical acclaim within the European comics industry for its visual sophistication and its willingness to present a morally complex view of the Teutoburg Forest conflict.
