Where it came from
Die Abenteuer von Blake und Mortimer, or The Adventures of Blake and Mortimer, originated in the post-war Franco-Belgian comics tradition, created by Edgar P. Jacobs in 1946. Issue 28, titled 'Der letzte Pharao', represents a notable modern expansion of the series. Published in 2019, this volume was crafted as a prestige project, inviting acclaimed artist François Schuiten to reinterpret the iconic universe. The narrative bridges the gap between Jacobs' original aesthetic and Schuiten's signature architectural surrealism, set within a decaying, futuristic Brussels.
The design philosophy behind this installment leans heavily into the 'Ligne Claire' heritage established by Jacobs while embracing the dense, intricate line work characteristic of Schuiten's style. Written by Thomas Gunzig, Jaco Van Dormael, and François Schuiten, the book was conceived to honor the classic mystery-adventure tropes of the series while grounding them in a darker, more melancholic atmosphere. It was met with significant critical appreciation for its bold departure from the standard serial formula, particularly praised for its atmospheric use of light and shadow.
