Where it came from
Die tollsten Geschichten von Donald Duck – Sonderheft was a long-running German comic series published by Ehapa, which began in 1965. The series was designed to showcase the work of influential Disney comic creators, primarily focusing on Carl Barks, whose stories defined the look and personality of Duckburg for generations of European readers. Issue number 93, released in the 1980s, fits into the later period of this collection, which maintained a consistent format featuring glossy covers and high-quality paper stock compared to smaller, mass-market comics of the era.
The editorial team behind the Sonderheft series aimed to curate the best of the Disney catalogue to cater to a growing base of adult collectors and nostalgic readers in West Germany. By selecting classic Barks material and occasionally pairing it with contemporary creators, the publication established itself as a staple of German pop culture. It was received as a premium format for Donald Duck fans, often serving as a gateway for younger readers to discover the nuanced, adventurous storytelling of the Golden Age of Disney comics.
