Where it came from
Die Wege von Malefosse, known in its original French as Les Chemins de Malefosse, is a historical adventure series created by writer Daniel Bardet and artist François Dermaut. Debuting in the early 1980s, the narrative is set against the turbulent backdrop of the 16th-century French Wars of Religion. It follows two landsknecht mercenaries, Grimm and Pritz, as they navigate a landscape of political upheaval and moral ambiguity. The series is celebrated for its dense, atmospheric artwork and its commitment to historical grit, favoring a grounded portrayal of medieval life over romanticized fantasy.
This sixth volume of the Gesamtausgabe, or collected edition, serves to preserve the latter chapters of the saga for contemporary readers. François Dermaut’s illustration style, characterized by meticulous cross-hatching and a somber, earthen color palette, was intended to evoke the claustrophobia and brutality of the era. The collected editions were produced to offer long-term fans and new collectors a comprehensive reading experience, maintaining the original artistic integrity while providing the structural consistency required for archival series.
