Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme #1

Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme #1 was published in November 1988, marking the beginning of the character's second major ongoing solo series. The title was launched during a period when Marvel Comics was looking to reinvigorate the Sorcerer Supreme's presence in the publishing lineup, moving him away from his previous bi-monthly anthology status and into a dedicated monthly title that balanced dark mystical themes with the traditional superhero storytelling of the era.

The issue was written by Peter Gillis with art by Richard Case, who brought a distinctively atmospheric and slightly surreal visual style to the character. Their creative direction focused on grounding Stephen Strange within the complexities of modern magic and his heavy responsibilities as Sorcerer Supreme. The book was generally well-received by fans of the character, praised for its commitment to maintaining the cosmic, arcane tone that Steve Ditko and Stan Lee established in the 1960s while updating the series for the late 1980s landscape.
