Where it came from
Released in 2006, this sketchbook served as a promotional and behind-the-scenes showcase for the work of Eric 'Ebas' Basaldua, a prolific illustrator known for his contributions to the comic book industry. Published by Image Comics, the collection was designed to highlight his distinctively polished, detail-oriented style that had become a staple of pin-up style cover art during the mid-2000s.
The sketchbook functions as a curated portfolio, featuring a mix of finished commissions, character studies, and concept sketches. By positioning this as an 'issue 0' release, the publisher leveraged the collector-focused numbering conventions typical of comic book culture, allowing fans to access Basaldua's creative process and techniques in a format that mimicked the aesthetic of a standard comic issue.
