Eric Castel #1

Eric Castel #1 marked the beginning of a long-running Franco-Belgian sports comic series centered on a talented French footballer who moves to Spain to play for FC Barcelona. Created in 1979 by writer Raymond Reding and artist Françoise Hugues, the series emerged during a period when sports-themed comics were gaining significant traction in European publications. It was originally serialized in the magazine Pif Gadget, reflecting the era's interest in blending serialized narrative with the popular culture of professional football.

The visual identity of the series, established in this first volume, leaned into a realistic and dynamic aesthetic that sought to capture the movement of the game alongside the personal drama of the protagonist. Raymond Reding, a former semi-professional player, brought an authentic grounding to the script, focusing on the tactical and emotional complexities of life as a star athlete. The series was well-received for its attention to detail and its ability to act as a bridge between fans of the sport and the medium of bandes dessinées, eventually securing a dedicated following across Europe.
