Eric Stanton & the History of the Bizarre Underground #1

Published in the late 1980s by Eros Comix, this series was curated to preserve and celebrate the work of Eric Stanton, a pivotal figure in mid-century fetish art and underground comics. Stanton was well-known for his association with John Willie and his contributions to the Bizarre lifestyle magazine scene in the 1950s. This publication served as a retrospective, documenting the evolution of his distinct style, which emphasized bold line work and complex narrative scenarios that had previously been confined to specialty underground channels.

The editorial intent behind the series was to contextualize Stanton's influence on the broader erotic comics medium. By archiving these illustrations and stories, the publishers aimed to present Stanton not just as an illustrator, but as a key architect of a burgeoning underground aesthetic. Upon release, the issue was received as a scholarly effort within the alternative comics community, helping to legitimize the preservation of adult-oriented comic art history and providing collectors with a structured look at his decades-long career.
