Where it came from
Excalibur #7, released in 1989, emerged during the formative period of the Marvel Comics series centered on a British-based superhero team. The series was created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Alan Davis, conceived as a way to continue the adventures of former X-Men members like Nightcrawler and Kitty Pryde in a tone distinct from the main mutant titles, leaning toward whimsical, meta-fictional, and surreal storytelling.
This particular issue, illustrated by Alan Davis, benefits from his iconic, fluid linework which defined the early aesthetic of the book. As part of the ongoing 'Cross-Time Caper' storyline, the issue contributed to the series' reputation for creative experimentation and quirky humor, often reflecting Claremont's penchant for deep character development balanced against the unpredictable, multiversal narrative structure that set Excalibur apart from the grittier superhero comics of the era.
