Excalibur #84

Excalibur #84, released in December 1994, emerged during a transitional period for the title as it moved away from its original premise as a specialized British-centric team. This issue is part of a broader narrative arc penned by Warren Ellis, who took over the series to bring a grittier, more cerebral tone to the book. The story continues the team's ongoing struggles following the departure of several founding members and represents the period where the series grappled with its identity within the larger X-Men line of the mid-1990s.

The cover art and interior illustrations reflect the distinct house style of Marvel Comics during the mid-nineties, characterized by more kinetic, aggressive linework compared to the title's earlier, quirkier beginnings under Alan Davis. Readers of the time often viewed this era as a definitive shift toward standard superhero genre tropes, moving the team further from the eccentric 'superhero-spy' aesthetic that defined the book's initial launch. Despite the shift in tone, the issue remains a notable entry for collectors tracking Ellis's specific influence on the mutant corner of the Marvel Universe.
