Where it came from
FemForce #34, published in 1991 by AC Comics, stands as a hallmark entry in the long-running series created by Bill Black. The title was born out of the 1980s independent comic book movement, characterized by a deliberate homage to the Golden Age of comics, specifically focusing on the trope of the superheroine team. Black designed the series to showcase strong female protagonists in a medium that, at the time, frequently relegated them to supporting roles.
The creative direction for this issue leaned into the pulp-inspired aesthetic that defined AC Comics' visual identity. Featuring artwork that draws heavily on the style of classic adventure comics, the issue continues the saga of the titular team as they navigate geopolitical intrigue and science-fiction threats. Upon its release, the series was received by its niche audience as a nostalgic, tongue-in-cheek celebration of comic book tropes, cementing its place as a cult classic within the independent publishing landscape.
