Where it came from
FemForce #37, published by AC Comics in 1991, serves as a quintessential example of the independent comic book movement that gained traction during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The series, created by Bill Black, carved out a specific niche by focusing on a team of super-powered women in a style that deliberately paid homage to the Golden Age of comics, specifically the pulp aesthetics of the 1940s and 1950s.
The art and editorial direction for this period of the series maintained a consistent focus on high-adventure narratives and classic superhero tropes. By this issue, the title had established a dedicated cult following that appreciated Black's commitment to self-publishing and his distinctive, retro-inspired illustration style, which stood in stark contrast to the more gritty, deconstructionist trends dominating mainstream publishers at the time.
