Where it came from
Four Color #1090, published by Dell Comics in 1960, is a quintessential example of the long-running Four Color anthology series. This particular issue serves as a standalone feature for The Brothers Grimm, specifically showcasing adaptations of classic fairy tales. During this era, Dell Comics was renowned for its diverse output, often utilizing the Four Color banner to test potential series or provide one-shot comic book treatments for popular intellectual properties, literature, and folklore.
The creative execution of this issue reflects the house style of Dell's mid-century production, characterized by clean, approachable linework and vibrant, flat coloring intended for a broad, younger audience. As part of the publisher’s effort to expand their reach beyond traditional superhero fare, the adaptation aimed to capture the enchantment of traditional stories while adhering to the standard, highly accessible visual language of the late golden age of American comics.
