Where it came from
Four Color #105, published in 1946 by Dell Comics, represents a pivotal moment in the expansion of Walt Disney's intellectual properties into the comic book medium. As part of the 'Four Color' anthology series, which served as a testing ground for various characters and genres, this issue featured the debut of Uncle Scrooge McDuck in the story Christmas on Bear Mountain. Written and illustrated by the legendary Carl Barks, the issue introduced a character who would eventually become one of the most significant figures in the Disney canon.
Carl Barks, often referred to as 'The Good Duck Artist,' approached the character of Scrooge with a blend of curmudgeonly wit and hidden depth, diverging from the more lighthearted tone of earlier Donald Duck shorts. His design work on Scrooge established the iconic visual shorthand—the top hat, spectacles, and cane—that remains a hallmark of the character today. The story was well-received upon release, setting the stage for Scrooge to graduate from a one-off supporting character to the protagonist of his own enduring series of adventures.
