Four Color #1163

Four Color #1163, published by Dell Comics in 1961, stands as a hallmark of the long-running Four Color anthology series. The series functioned as a testing ground for Dell, allowing the publisher to trial various licensed properties, original stories, and character-driven narratives before committing to standalone titles. This specific issue features the Lone Ranger, a character who became synonymous with the publisher's output during the mid-twentieth century as part of their extensive western catalog.

The art and editorial direction for this period of Dell westerns focused on accessible, family-friendly storytelling that leaned heavily into the nostalgic Americana aesthetic popular during the post-war era. These comics were intended for mass-market newsstand distribution, emphasizing clear line work and episodic adventures that adhered to the strict content standards of the time. While the contributors were often uncredited in line with Dell's house style, the series is recognized by historians for its role in cementing the Lone Ranger's visual identity in comic book form during the late golden age of comics.
