Four Color #1180

Four Color #1180, published in 1961 by Dell Comics, is a notable installment in a legendary series that served as a testing ground for potential new titles. During this era, the Four Color line was used by Dell to release stories featuring a wide variety of licensed characters, ranging from Disney properties to television adaptations. This specific issue features a story starring the popular cartoon character Woody Woodpecker, reflecting the brand's heavy reliance on animated IP to anchor its comic book division during the early 1960s.

The art and editorial direction for this issue align with the standard house style maintained by Dell at the time, which prioritized clean, accessible storytelling suitable for younger readers. As part of the transition period before Western Publishing ended its partnership with Dell, these issues were produced under a business model that emphasized high-volume distribution through newsstands and drugstores rather than the specialty comic shop market that would emerge decades later. While these issues are now collected for their mid-century aesthetic and cultural nostalgia, they were originally crafted as disposable entertainment.
