Where it came from
Frankenstein: New World—The Speed of Darkness #1 continues the narrative established by Mike Mignola and Thomas Sniegoski in the Hellboy universe. Published by Dark Horse Comics, the series follows the evolution of the Frankenstein monster as he navigates a post-apocalyptic world. This installment builds upon the 2022 miniseries, expanding the monster's search for purpose and belonging within the desolate landscape of a transformed Earth.
The visual language of the issue maintains the stark, atmospheric aesthetic associated with the wider Hellboy mythos. Written by Thomas Sniegoski and featuring art by Christopher Mitten, the design choices emphasize a gritty, survivalist tone. The creative team aimed to explore the creature's humanity through minimalist dialogue and moody, shadow-heavy panels, which were generally well-received by fans of the dark fantasy genre for their thematic consistency with previous installments.
