Where it came from
Frankenstein: New World—The Speed of Darkness is a limited series published by Dark Horse Comics, serving as a continuation of Mike Mignola's Hellboy universe. Released in 2022, the series was written by Mike Mignola and Thomas E. Sniegoski, with artwork by Christopher Mitten and colors by Michelle Madsen. The narrative follows the monster, Frankenstein, in a post-apocalyptic future, exploring themes of legacy and isolation that have long been hallmarks of Mignola's storytelling style.
The visual design of this issue adheres to the established aesthetic of the Mignolaverse, characterized by high-contrast shadows and angular, expressive character work. Christopher Mitten was tasked with capturing the rugged, desolate atmosphere of this new world while maintaining the iconic silhouette of Frankenstein’s monster. The series was generally received as a thoughtful expansion of Mignola's gothic mythos, praised for its consistency with the established lore and its atmospheric depth.
