Where it came from
FX Senshi Kurumi-chan #1 is a seminal work within the niche genre of financial-themed manga, created by Hiroshi Ishikawa. First serialized online starting in 2017, the series gained a cult following for its unconventional premise, which blends high-stakes day trading with the tropes of the magical girl genre. The narrative follows a young woman who utilizes foreign exchange trading as a source of power to battle antagonists, reflecting the growing cultural fascination with retail investing in Japan during the late 2010s.
The design of the series balances traditional manga aesthetic sensibilities with intricate, technical explanations of financial markets. Ishikawa’s illustration style was purposefully crafted to make complex market concepts like leverage and margin calls accessible to a broader audience, effectively using the magical girl archetype as a vehicle for financial literacy. Upon its physical release, the series was received with curiosity by both manga enthusiasts and finance commentators, who noted its surprising accuracy regarding currency market volatility despite its fantastical trappings.
