Where it came from
Released in 1982, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #2 continued the narrative established by Larry Hama and Herb Trimpe for Marvel Comics. This series served as a sophisticated cross-promotional engine for Hasbro’s re-launched 3.75-inch action figure line, moving away from the traditional 12-inch soldier concept to feature specialized team members fighting the terrorist organization Cobra. The comic provided the vital character backstories and personalities that helped cement the brand in pop culture.
Larry Hama, a veteran and comics creator, was instrumental in shaping the gritty, tactical tone of the series, drawing upon his own military experiences to ground the fantastical premise. Herb Trimpe’s dynamic illustrations paired with Hama’s writing established a clear visual identity for characters like Snake Eyes and Scarlett. The series was met with significant critical and commercial success, ultimately running for 155 issues and establishing the G.I. Joe franchise as a cornerstone of 1980s media.
