Where it came from
Published by Marvel Comics in July 1985, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #37 was written by Larry Hama, the architect of the series' dense, character-driven mythology, with cover and interior art by Rod Whigham and Andy Mushynsky. This issue emerged during a period of high popularity for the franchise, as the toy line and its tie-in media reached a cultural peak in the mid-1980s.
The story, titled 'The Art of the Deal', focused on the internal dynamics and covert operations of the Joe team, reflecting Hama's signature approach of blending military procedural elements with the heightened stakes of comic book storytelling. The issue was well-received by fans for its focus on the G.I. Joe team's complex roster, contributing to the title's reputation as one of the most successful licensed comic books of its era.
