Where it came from
Released by Marvel Comics in 1974, this oversized issue arrived during the height of the 1970s martial arts craze sparked by the popularity of Bruce Lee and the television series Kung Fu. It served as a showcase for the publisher's attempts to expand their genre offerings beyond traditional superheroes, leaning heavily into the atmospheric, espionage-tinged storytelling that defined the Master of Kung Fu series.
The issue features work by writer Doug Moench and artist Paul Gulacy, a creative team celebrated for their cinematic, noir-inspired approach to the character of Shang-Chi. Their collaboration is widely regarded as a high point in 1970s comics, praised for its innovative panel layouts and moody, gritty tone that stood out significantly from the more colorful, bombastic titles of the era.
