Where it came from
Released by Marvel Comics in 1974, Giant-Size Master of Kung Fu #3 emerged during the mid-seventies craze for martial arts cinema that swept American pop culture. This oversized format allowed for extended storytelling and lavish splash pages, reflecting Marvel's effort to capitalize on the popularity of Bruce Lee and the subsequent success of their own Shang-Chi character, who had debuted just a year earlier in the standard-sized Special Marvel Edition.
The issue features cover and interior work indicative of the era's gritty, action-oriented aesthetic, heavily influenced by the writing of Doug Moench and the dynamic illustrative style of Paul Gulacy. Gulacy, in particular, was lauded for his cinematic panel layouts and dedication to capturing authentic martial arts movement, which helped elevate the title beyond a simple exploitation tie-in and cemented the series as a cult favorite among readers of the Bronze Age of comics.
