Where it came from
Released by Marvel Comics in 1974, Giant-Size Master of Kung Fu #2 arrived during the height of the 1970s martial arts craze in Western media, which was heavily fueled by the success of Bruce Lee films. As part of a short-lived series designed to capitalize on the popularity of the monthly title, this issue allowed for expanded storytelling and reprints, fitting into a market trend where publishers sought to maximize the reach of their most successful genre characters.
The issue features work by writer Doug Moench and artist Paul Gulacy, a creative team celebrated for elevating the Master of Kung Fu title through a gritty, cinematic visual style heavily influenced by espionage thrillers and pulp fiction. By blending traditional kung fu tropes with the aesthetics of spy noir, the duo successfully transformed what could have been a derivative character into one of Marvel's most critically acclaimed cult classics, earning a dedicated following for the series' moody atmosphere and sophisticated layouts.
