Where it came from
Released by Marvel Comics in 1975, Giant-Size Master of Kung Fu #4 emerged during the height of the 1970s martial arts craze in Western pop culture. As part of a series designed to provide expansive, self-contained adventures for the title character Shang-Chi, this issue capitalized on the genre's popularity while leaning into the espionage-thriller elements that defined Doug Moench’s definitive run on the series.
The issue features cover art and interior contributions that reflect the gritty, cinematic aesthetic of the era, heavily influenced by the work of Paul Gulacy. Gulacy’s dynamic, shadow-drenched style was instrumental in establishing the sophisticated, atmosphere-heavy tone of the title, which was widely praised by critics and readers for its departure from traditional superhero conventions in favor of atmospheric storytelling.
