Guardians of Metropolis #1

Guardians of Metropolis #1 was published by DC Comics in 1994 as part of a series centered on the urban defenders of Superman's home city. Created in the wake of the 'Death of Superman' narrative arc, the series was designed to explore the lives of the city's secondary protectors and ordinary citizens in an environment redefined by the loss and eventual return of the Man of Steel. It reflected the editorial desire of the mid-1990s to expand the scope of the Metropolis setting beyond the immediate inner circle of the Justice League.

The creative direction for the series focused on a grittier, more grounded perspective of superheroics, shifting the narrative lens away from cosmic threats toward internal municipal challenges. Written by Jo Duffy and illustrated with a style characteristic of the mid-nineties aesthetic, the title was positioned as a character-driven companion to the main Superman family books. While it remains a notable example of the era's expansive world-building, it was a relatively short-lived experiment, ultimately serving as a period piece documenting the shifting tonal landscape of DC's urban fiction during that decade.
