Where it came from
Guardians of Metropolis #3 was published in 1994 as part of a four-issue limited series produced by DC Comics. This series emerged during a period when the publisher was actively expanding the mythos of Superman’s home city, focusing on the specialized police force, the Special Crimes Unit, tasked with managing the chaos created by the city's super-powered residents. It served as a procedural drama grounded in a world of capes and metahumans, highlighting the perspectives of the officers rather than the vigilantes.
The series was written by Dave DeVries, with artwork primarily contributed by Lou Harrison and others. The creative team aimed to portray a gritty, urban atmosphere that contrasted with the larger-than-life nature of Superman, emphasizing the vulnerability of ordinary humans in a high-stakes environment. Upon its release, the series was received as a niche but well-executed expansion of the DC Universe, appreciated by readers for its focus on the civilian and tactical elements of the Metropolis police force.
