Guardians of the Galaxy #18

Guardians of the Galaxy #18, published in October 1991, was a pivotal chapter in the original Guardians of the Galaxy series that launched in 1990 under the Marvel Comics imprint. Written by Jim Valentino, who also served as the primary creative force behind this iteration of the team, the issue continues the complex, dark-future narrative of the 31st century. The series was designed to explore a localized, self-contained corner of the Marvel Universe, featuring the original Vance Astro-led team as they navigated a galaxy recovering from the Badoon invasion.

The aesthetic of this era was heavily influenced by Valentino's distinct, gritty illustrative style, which sought to differentiate the 31st-century setting from the traditional space-faring adventures of the era. The issue was received by readers as a grounded exploration of legacy and survival, grounding high-concept science fiction in personal, character-driven stakes. While these early versions of the characters remained distinct from the modern cinematic team, they established the foundational lore that would eventually lead to the franchise's broader expansion in the mid-2000s.
