Where it came from
Gunsmith Cats: The Return of Gray was released in the late 1990s as a follow-up to Kenichi Sonoda’s original high-octane manga series. This sequel miniseries continues the adventures of Rally Vincent and Minnie-May Hopkins, focusing on their work as bounty hunters in Chicago. It was produced during a period when Sonoda’s work was gaining significant international traction, benefiting from the popularity of the preceding Gunsmith Cats series which helped define the 'gun-toting girl' aesthetic in 1990s seinen manga.
The visual design reflects Sonoda’s signature style, characterized by meticulous attention to firearm mechanics, classic American muscle cars, and dynamic action sequences. As a creator, Sonoda was heavily influenced by American cinema and police procedural tropes, striving to blend gritty realism with lighthearted character interactions. The series was well-received by fans of the original run, praised for maintaining the technical precision and charismatic leads that established the franchise as a cult classic within the North American anime and manga scene.
