Hanna-Barbera The Funky Phantom #1

The Funky Phantom #1 was published by Gold Key Comics in 1971, serving as a tie-in to the Hanna-Barbera animated series that premiered the same year. The series was developed as a supernatural-themed follow-up to the success of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, featuring a group of teenagers who travel in a dune buggy and solve mysteries alongside the ghost of a Revolutionary War soldier, Mudsy, and his cat, Boo.

The comic adaptation captured the aesthetic of the television animation, which leaned into the psychedelic and spooky motifs prevalent in early 1970s Saturday morning cartoons. While the show and its subsequent comic spin-offs did not achieve the same cultural longevity as the Scooby-Doo franchise, the issue remains a distinct piece of era-specific animation ephemera, reflecting the studio's broader strategy of extending their character IPs into the print medium during the height of their television dominance.
