Hellraiser: Resurrections - The Onanistic Ritual #1

Hellraiser: Resurrections - The Onanistic Ritual #1 was released in the early 1990s as part of the expanded multimedia footprint of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser franchise. During this period, Epic Comics—an imprint of Marvel—sought to explore the dark, visceral mythology of the Cenobites through serialized storytelling, capitalizing on the intense cult following generated by the original films. This issue functions as a niche expansion of the narrative lore, focusing on the transgressive and occult themes inherent to the series’ depiction of suffering and desire.

The creative direction for this series relied heavily on the gothic, industrial aesthetic established by Barker’s source material. The illustrators and writers were tasked with maintaining the visceral intensity of the Cenobites' realm, utilizing stark, atmospheric linework to translate the body horror of the films into a static print medium. Upon release, the issue was received primarily by dedicated horror collectors and fans of Barker’s work, serving as a darker, more experimental companion piece to the mainstream comic output of the era.
