Where it came from
Published in November 1998, Heroes for Hire #17 marked a significant turning point in the series created by John Ostrander and Pasqual Ferry. The title was born out of the 1990s Marvel editorial strategy to revive classic concepts, centering on a mercenary group led by Luke Cage and Iron Fist. By the time this issue was released, the series was navigating the broader editorial shifts of the late nineties, focusing on character-driven narratives within the grounded, urban corners of the Marvel Universe.
The creative team for this period, including writer John Ostrander and artist Pasqual Ferry, leaned into a gritty aesthetic that sought to blend superhero tropes with noir sensibilities. Ferry’s dynamic, angular style provided a distinct visual identity that moved away from the more traditional comic art of the early decade. While the series eventually concluded shortly after this period, it remains noted by collectors for its attempt to maintain a mature tone for legacy characters who had been sidelined during the height of the X-Men and Image Comics booms.
