Where it came from
It Takes More Than a Pretty Face to Fall in Love, known in Japan as Kao dake ja suki ni narimasen, is a romantic comedy manga series created by the mangaka Karin Anzai. The series began serialization in the shojo manga magazine Hana to Yume in 2020. It follows the story of a high school girl who is obsessed with handsome faces, only to find herself attracted to a boy who masks his face behind his hair, challenging her shallow perceptions of romance.
The character designs and storytelling reflect the classic tropes of modern shojo manga, focusing on high school dynamics and the slow development of intimacy. The series has been noted for its playful art style and the expressive character work of Anzai. By the time the third volume was released, the series had established a consistent following in the Japanese market, praised for its lighthearted humor and the visual contrast between the protagonist’s infatuation and the male lead’s enigmatic nature.
