Justice League International #17

Published in September 1988, Justice League International #17 serves as a key installment in the critically acclaimed run by writers Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis with artist Kevin Maguire. This era of the title is renowned for shifting the Justice League from a traditional superhero team into a character-driven, comedic ensemble piece often referred to as the 'Bwah-ha-ha' era. The series was designed to breathe new life into the franchise by emphasizing the interpersonal bickering and mundane frustrations of global heroes, a tone that stood in stark contrast to the gritty, somber direction many comics were taking during the late eighties.

The issue itself maintains the series' hallmark balance of superhero action and workplace sitcom dynamics. Kevin Maguire’s expressive facial work was instrumental in establishing the book's signature personality, as he focused on the subtle reactions and body language of the eclectic roster. Upon its release, this volume of the Justice League was lauded for its accessibility and willingness to subvert tropes, effectively cementing the JLI as a cult favorite that remains influential among fans of superhero satire.
