Justice League International #20

Published in early 1989, Justice League International #20 represents a pivotal moment in the 'Bwah-ha-ha' era of the series. Written by Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis with art by Kevin Maguire, this issue was part of a creative run that famously shifted the tone of the Justice League from high-stakes operatic heroism to a character-driven, comedic workplace dynamic. By placing iconic figures like Batman, Martian Manhunter, and Booster Gold in mundane or absurd situations, the team redefined how DC Comics approached ensemble superhero books in the late eighties.

The visual identity of this era was defined by Maguire’s expressive character work, which prioritized facial expressions and body language to emphasize the humor of the script. This particular issue follows the established aesthetic of the series, characterized by a grounded, contemporary setting that starkly contrasted with the epic cosmic threats typically associated with the Justice League title. It remains a touchstone for readers who appreciate the series' unique balance of genuine character development and satirical deconstruction of the superhero genre.
