Where it came from
Kamui-Den, created by Sanpei Shirato, began serialization in 1964 within the pages of the avant-garde manga magazine Garo. The series emerged during a period of intense political and social upheaval in Japan, serving as a gritty, historical examination of class struggle, feudal oppression, and the harsh realities of life for the disenfranchised. Issue 12 is a representative installment of this sprawling epic, which was noted for its departure from the whimsical tone of contemporary children's comics.
Shirato, a master of gekiga, utilized the series to explore philosophical themes through the lens of the ninja protagonist, Kamui. The design and narrative structure of the individual issues were focused on dense, woodblock-inspired artwork that favored realism and visceral action over stylized abstraction. At the time of its release, the series was received with critical acclaim by students and political activists, cementing its legacy as a seminal work in the development of mature, thematic manga.
